Well as a person with a bit of depth experience I would say you are starting with too wide of a toy. Well if you have only gone up 1/4 inch in size it might be the material of the plug. There are some materials that my ass rejects. Try a different plug. Possibly one made of vinyl. In my progression to the 3.5 inch club I went up in 1/4 inch increments with absolutely no problems.
