I must say that I have experience only with female asses but I don't think that the difference would be of any importance in this aspect.
When you are stretching to a new limit, or going over 2.75", you shouldn't go more then 1-1.5 cm (1/2") in [u]circumference[/u] between the two subsequent insertions!
Notice that diameter (⌀) is "across" measure of width of a circle or a circular object, while circumference is an "around" measure of that same object. I should also point out that there is an embarrassingly widespread (no pun intended) ignorance regarding circumference/diameter relationship. [b]Circumference = diameter * Pi (3.141592...)[/b] and 1 cm ≈ 2/5". That means that your current limit is 11" (around) and you are trying to accommodate 11.78". You should progress more gradually... try first inserting 11.4" or even less.

Same thing... You shouldn't jump from 2.35" diameter to more then 2.48"-2.53" in diameter. Going from 2.35" strait up to 3.75" is ridiculous... It wouldn't be productive and it is potentially dangerous. You should progress more gradually... First go for 2.5" insertable, then progress to 2.65", etc. With each step you should have at least couple of days of practice and when you reach 2.75"-3" it will take you a week or so of work out to establish each new accomplishment. It's really different for everyone but this is a general rule of thumb.
From now on I will refer to [u]circumference only[/u], because it is more practical to measure objects "around", with a measuring tape...

As for diy toys and household items, I find vegetables quite useful, especially apples. Buy bunch of "Red delicious" (as they have graceful shape) and pick 5-6 of suitable once (circumference wise). Remove stems and put each apple in at least two condoms for reinforcement so that they have a reasonable strength in case you need a help expelling it. Use only watter based lube so it doesn't damage the condoms. Some body lotions and creams are especially slippery when mixed with water but they make condoms very fragile!

[b]Important notice:[/b] Do not insert any vegtables into the rectum without a condom! Rectal lining does not have all the necessary (immunological) protection against various microorganisms (because it's not an usual entrance route). Further more, rectal lining is very absorbant and leads directly into your blood stream so you don't want any pesticides up there!
Another important thing to know is that thrusting (going repeatedly in and out) is doing all the work of relaxing and stretching the sphincter muscles and not the presence of an object in the rectum per se. It may be pleasent to have something up the ass but it won't help you much in your objective. Besides, without thrusting and stretching anal sphincter begins to tighten and it will be a lot harder to expel/extract an object that went completely in (sphincter closes behind it). Not to mention that only one thin condom damaged from inadequate lubricant may not help you at all!
If you are impatient and jump to a larger apple right away, (without previous preparation) and leave it there for some time, it may be very difficult or even impossible to pass it out. Just imagine embarrassment of going to an E.R. with such a "health problem". So do not underestimate importance of good warm-up, gradual progression and multiple condoms on each item that goes completely in!
'Nough about safety, back to fun...
Worm up as usually and then start with the smallest apple (narrow end first). For example: if your record limit is 11" in circumference (3.5" ⌀) then you should start with the 10" one, then continue with the 10,5" and the 11"... Each inserted apple should be pulled out right away and inserted quickly back in as many times as needed until sphincter loosens up and stops resisting as much as it did in the beginning. Remember, thrusting is doing all the work! At the end you should be able to insert 11.25 and after that maybe even 11.5" one, which would be more then enough for that session.
If you don't have a partner, the best position for work out is laying on the back with legs spread out and bent in knees (the soles of your feet on the base or in the air). Just keep in mind that any movement of your legs will induce involuntary clenching of levator ani muscle and make insertion more difficult.
And another tip... prepare and lube up all insertables before you start your exercise so you don't need to take a break even for a minute. I find that anal sphincter can begin tightening seconds after you stop thrusting it, which is very important factor when you are pushing your limits. Believe you me... I've trained more then a few asses up to the spectacular results.
