i think your definition has been the more effective, so far
there is only a flaw

so i would change your definition as
a person that only like the smell of same-sex people is gay
if he/she likes both smells he/she is potentially or actually bisexual
if they only like the other sex' smell, they are strictly eterosexual
of course this is a working definition, the way you try to introduce yourself on a board, in a community, etc
