a question on .avi files

This is probably a stupid question, but I can't open any .avi files on this computer. I've updated both windows media viewer and quicktime to their most advanced versions, but when I try to open an AVI, i get an error message saying that I don't have the right codec and that it's not available on the server. Opening in either program, I get audio but not video.

The computer in question is a piece of shit Dell Inspiron 2500 running Windows XP.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

BUTT

VLC movie player should play any playable file.

if you can´t open ANY avi-file it seems to be a bigger problem than codes.

maybe this thread can help you: http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-105350.html

if you can´t open some avi-file but some play fine than it seems to be a codec problem. try to use gspot ( http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ ) to find out which codec is used by the files that don´t play.

if it is a codec problem the k-lite mega codec pack will help you: http://www.codecguide.com/

after my most recent update, windows media player proudly announced that it had successfully downloaded the codec it needed to play the file, and then continued to torment me by playing the audio with battery randomizations for visuals.

thanks for the suggestions...
