also, just a side note - the culture around private videos on thisvid is so weird to me. There are just so many people on there who are super protective of their uploads (for example, the person who uploaded the video we’re talking about who has gone so far as to make “no vids no add” part of their username) and it seems like there’s no real benefit to that kind of gatekeeping.

It's weird compared to the culture of 'access to all porn content on demand for free'. I think the people who use thisvid in this way see it more as a place to share share videos with likeminded people who then return the favor. For example someone who has bought a video or scene may be happy to share it with their thisvid "friends", and their friends will do the same with the videos they own. Making it 'friends only' means they can control who has access to the video, instead of putting it on a tube site for all to see and fucking over the content creator. Obviously they're still uploading content without the creator's permission, but it only reaches a small audience. Kind of like the difference between burning another copy of a DVD to give to a buddy vs uploading it to a torrent site.
