I'd be cautious - numbing your ass to put larger things in kind of defeats the objective in my opinion...you'll end up hurting yourself for one, and with the area numb where is the pleasure? Each to their own of course but I certainly wouldn't continue while bleeding. 

I use EMLA cream for another modification but the pleasure and ultimate goal isn't related to the action of the event (hope that makes sense)

Be safe and sensible whatever you do but wait till you heal.
