APNewsBreak: Feds shut down file-sharing website
By MATTHEW BARAKAT, Associated Press

McLEAN, Va. (AP)
Federal prosecutors in Virginia have shut down one of the world's largest file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.
The indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after websites shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.
Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.
The indictment says at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular website in the world

Look up SOPA & PIPA act

The US is a fucked-up country.
You can manufature and sell with little or no restrictions assault weapons that can be used by an individual to murder many people and the seller and the manufacturer are not liable for how their product is used because it's argued-"guns don't kill people, people kill people"(although those weapons do make it much easier).
Yet when it comes to "cyberlocker" type sites like MU in the eyes of the US justice system apparently it's the responsibility of the seller of the service what those individuals who use it do with it.

America. A country seeking to make copyright infringement harder than mass murder.

As I said messed up set of values they have over there.

Just one of many issues. Most of the pressure for this type of stuff comes from government people who will make money one way or the other by laws like this. Really helps no one except big business. My own country scares me a lot.
(I like to tell people I am old and will die soon so I won't have to live in the screwed up country USA will become if they stay on the current path) Edited by skifreak

This just shows how important this news is to almost everyone on this forum-23 views & only 4 people answered out of over 72000 members. Most didn't even bother to look the topic.
But to me,this is MAJOR.
I am asking myself what do the US need SOPA or PIPA if they can take down sites without those bills
The US says they took down MU because pirated material-and what is shared on this forum?!?Cakes & popcorn for free?!?
People don't realize that the US can take down whatever site they will(even this forum-because like I said-we are not sharing popcorn over here)
Jesus fucking Christ-they can take Google because of the same reason-then how is everyone going to find their fix for the day?!?
THe US Gov is going to take everyones freedom & the majority don't even fucking CARE!!!
Sad,very sad Edited by dinko
