Hi guys,

I just finished reading a plethora of fiction books, mostly sci fi like The Stars my Destination and The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester, I am Legend by Richard Matheson, Ubik by philip K Dick and also the classic Homer' s Odyessey.

They are all great books full of interesting ideas and I was wondering if any of you like sci-fi and/or the classics?

in a sense i would consider 1984 and brave new world sci-fi although their scope goes way beyond that, and classics they certainly are. if you have not read them then do so, they will make your penis unfeasibly large.

By the way, aren't Chasm City and Neuromancer more modern sci-fi tales? I've heard good things about both books.

I know many reckon that Neuromancer kick-started the cyberpunk genre.

I love these guys, especially Dick. Huh Huh Huh....

The Stars My Destination. I am Legend and Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch are 3 of my favorite books.

If you enjoy PKD you need to find a collection of the short stories he did in the late 60's and 70's.

So get Eye of the Sygil or get I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon.

If it must be last century, dont miss Robert A. Heinlein !
I've only read "Stranger in a Strange Land" - it's fantastic.
- and he's written MANY more : )

Still, the newer ones are more "exciting" because the authors can extrapolate from modern science: Internet, Nanotec, Genetics and Cosmology.

The visionary: Stephen Baxter, Alistair Reynolds, Iain M. Banks
The adventurous: Peter F. Hamilton
The Action: Walter Jon Williams and Richard Morgan
The Strange: China Mieville

"A scanner darkly" was an excellent surprise to me, very close to my view of Dick paranoia, especially on drug abuse patterns haha.
I hear recently that Dick is now (or will be soon) published in the most famous writers collection in America, (Writers of America or something like that, dunno) very close to the "La pleiade" collection we have in France where the most important authors are published. Another head writer (mostly speed & LSD) in the Hall of Fame muahaha.
The funny thing to me is that Dick's paranoid masterpieces are now frequently used by Hollywood moguls to get their hit movies as we are now living in some kind of Philip K; Dick weird and sick world. jester.gif (^ ^)

Great find Gni, notworthy.gif thanx for digging this out, my Weirdo mags are hidden somewhere in my comix collection and I can't find it now so it's a pleasure to read these pages again ! Weird story isn't ? Internet is so nice to get infos now smile.gif
But I don't think Crumb is as paranoid than Dick (he surely was at a certain time !), I met Crumb once, he's a very quiet and lonesome man with a wonderful inner life but not more hooked on drugs, he smoked weed and try many drugs of the pyschedelic era in the 60' (first Lsd trip in 65 I think) and the early 70' but he stop doing drugs a long time ago. Now he's living in a nice southern France village cottage where he write, draw and play music, living along with Aline Kominsky, his comix author wife.
Long live Crumb, one of my strongest shock on comix in my life !
Do you know Crumb's Mr SnoiD ? Somekind of a dwarf living in a girl asshole, a perfect RSBB hero! Robert Crumb have a long time obsession on big ass ladies and anal fantasies, yummy.

smile.gif Underground board, yeahhhhh !
That was just a business/publishing meeting 10 years ago that led nowhere alas. Just saw him a few times more in comix convention or on his concerts with his "group" "Les primitifs du futur" too. Always nice to meet a legend I always loved. But he's rather "shy".

So Curiousboy met Buk ? Woaow ! Cheers Curious ! I hope you got drunk with the Old timer hehe. notworthy.gif

To meet Kusturica you should have come to Cannes 60th festival, he was here with the other "Palmes d'Or"… He sems the kind of man I could travel with muhahaha smile.gif (^ ^) crazy.gif Edited by Tangerine

Been reading sci-fi & fantasy all my life... Not to get off topic, butt my favorite fantasy/sci-fi author was Roger Zalazny--the "Amber" series, "Lord of Light".... How about "The Once and Future King"- T.H.White.... & of coarse Heinlein's "Time Enough For Love"... where a guy goes back in time to meet his family- before the story is done(about 1000pgs) he has fucked his computer that had her memory put into a female body, his 2 cloned twin sisters & his mother....& this was written in the 50's... way ahead of his time, don't U think!!!--bf

Yep, my buddy, Buck and me + couple of other italian friends and an american lawyer got so drunk on a magnum 5 lt. Barbera bottle, we had to give him a couple of "lines" to get him sober enough to be carried home. There was Linda waiting for him, we put him asleep and then she gave me a nice gratitude blowjob....ah good old 80`s!
I must to say, when he was totally pissed he became a bit of a pain in the ass...funny guy anyway!

Cheers Buck, I bet you look down sometimes and laugh your ass off!
Cheers to the 70`s and 80`s when everything was easy going!
Cheers to you my pals for...being here with me...

If you like the clasics & sience fiction, my personal recomendation would be Ilium and Olympos by Dan Simmons. But its best work it's still Hyperion and The fall of Hyperion.

Greetings

Heinlein rules!!!! And he has written a shitload of novels.
Also check out the old masters: Fredric Brown, Robert Bloch, Le Guin,...

And, for that matter, 1984 and Brave New World should be read by EVERYONE! And re-read every five or ten years! (And also Franz Kafka's Der Prozess)
